Early Life
On Feburary 12,1809, an important person was born. Nobody knew it, but Abraham Lincoln was going to be one of the greatest presidents when he grew up! He was born in a small one-room cabin in La Roe County, Kentucky. He had an older sister named Sarah who, when they weren't needed at home, walked two miles to school and two miles back with Abraham. He moved to Indiana when he was 7 years old.He helped his father build the cabin by cutting down trees. They had to clear the land before they could have a farm and the cabin. But they did it!
Sadly, when Abraham was around 9 his mother died. The next year his father married a widow named Sarah Bush Johnston. She had 3 children. Abraham liked his new stepmother and she liked him.

Lincoln's Reaction to Slavery
Anyway, back to politics. When Lincoln was elected, there were more than three million black slaves in the south. That's a lot! Lincoln didn't like slavery. It made him sad and depressed. Lincoln wanted the country to stay together especially when the 11 states seceded from the U.S. Lincoln did not want war, but it had to happen to free the slaves in the south. Fort Sumter was attacked on April 12, 1861. The war had only begun.

The Sad Assassination
Many people tried to assassinate Lincoln. One plan was to kidnap him and hold him captive. One day, Lincoln went to watch a play with Mary. The play had been going on for about a hour, and John Wilks Booth came up behind Lincoln and shoot him in the back of the head. Before all this happened, Abe had had a dream. He dreamed that he heard someone crying. He went to see them. He asked what what was wrong. The person said that someone had died. Abraham looked in the coffin beside the person crying. Do you know who was in the coffin? ABRAHAM LINCOLN HIMSELF! The next day he was shot. Poor Abe!
